University of Mumbai Overview

The University of Mumbai, originally established as the University of Bombay in 1857, stands as one of India's oldest and premier higher education institutions. Founded under Wood's Education Dispatch of 1854 by Sir Charles Wood, it was modeled after the University of London and began as an affiliating and examining body for colleges.

History and Evolution

Established on July 18, 1857, alongside the Universities of Calcutta and Madras, it initially granted degrees to affiliated colleges like Elphinstone College (Arts, 1835) and Grant Medical College (Medicine, 1845). The first degrees—Bachelor of Arts and Licentiate in Medicine—were awarded in 1862. Until 1904, it focused solely on examinations and affiliations; teaching departments and postgraduate courses were introduced thereafter. Post-independence, the Bombay University Act of 1953 reorganized its structure, and it was renamed University of Mumbai in 1996 to reflect the city's name change. It pioneered women's admission to all degrees in 1883.
