Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), formerly University of Pune, established on February 10, 1949, under the Poona University Act by the Bombay Legislature, spans a 411-acre campus in northwest Pune, serving over 800,000 students across 307 affiliated colleges and 43 departments in Pune, Ahmednagar, and Nashik districts.​

History and Establishment

Founded post-independence with Dr. M.R. Jayakar as first Vice-Chancellor, operations began at Nizam Guest House before shifting to the current Victorian-era Governor House campus secured by B.G. Kher on a 999-year lease; renamed in 2014 honoring social reformer Savitribai Phule.​
