About Us

Jesus and Mary College (JMC) is a women's college affiliated with the University of Delhi, established in July 1968 by the Congregation of Jesus and Mary, a Roman Catholic religious order founded by Saint Claudine Thevenet in Lyon, France, in 1818. The college began with just two courses—English (Hons.) and B.A. Pass—and quickly expanded to offer a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs across science, arts, and commerce streams. It is located on a 14-15 acre campus in Chanakyapuri, on the boundary of the Diplomatic Enclave in New Delhi.

JMC is strongly committed to empowering women through quality education and has steadily grown its student body and academic offerings over the decades. The college emphasizes holistic development by encouraging social responsibility through programs like the National Service Scheme (NSS), and it hosts one of the prominent cultural festivals called "Montage." The institution also supports distance and open learning through its Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) center on campus, offering additional UG and PG courses.

Introduction

Founded by the Roman Catholic congregation of the Religious of Jesus and Mary, JMC focuses on academic excellence, holistic student development, and values-based education. Located in Chanakyapuri, New Delhi, it is ranked among the top colleges under Delhi University and known for its rigorous academic programs and vibrant campus life.

History & Founding

• JMC was established in July 1968 as a constituent college of University of Delhi (DU).

• The college was founded by the Congregation of Jesus and Mary — a religious congregation originally established by Saint Claudine Thévenet in Lyon, France (1818). 

• The Congregation had started several educational institutions in India since the 19th century; JMC is part of that legacy, specifically envisioned to provide higher education to women from diverse backgrounds. 

• The college began modestly: its first session had only 116 students enrolled in English (Honours) and B.A. (Pass) courses.

• Over the decades, it expanded substantially. Now, JMC supports around 2,500 students (undergraduate and postgraduate), with many honours courses, vocational courses, education courses, etc.

JMC offers a range of undergraduate (UG), postgraduate (PG), vocational, and certificate courses:

• UG programs: BA (Honours and Programme), B.Com (Honours and Pass), B.Sc (Honours — Mathematics), B.Voc (e.g. Retail Management & IT, Healthcare Management), B.El.Ed (Bachelor in Elementary Education).

• Honours subjects span across disciplines: Economics, English, Hindi, History, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, Mathematics, Commerce, and more.

• PG courses: MA in English and Hindi.

• Certificate & Add-on courses: The college also offers value-added courses — for instance in Digital Marketing, Data Science & Analytics, Cyber Security — to help students gain additional industry-relevant skills.
