About Institute of Home Economics

Introduction

Institute of Home Economics (IHE) is a premier women's constituent college of the University of Delhi, founded in 1961 to empower women through education in home science and related fields. Located in Hauz Khas Enclave, it has evolved into a leading institution offering multidisciplinary programs with a focus on nutrition, science, and holistic development for around 800 students.​

History & Establishment

Established by Dr. (Mrs.) S. Malhan with a two-year Diploma in Home Science and a one-year Teacher's Training course, IHE became a University of Delhi constituent college in 1969. Key milestones include starting B.Sc. Home Science (Pass) in 1969, B.Sc. Microbiology (Hons.) in 1986, M.Sc. Food & Nutrition in 1992, and moving to its current 2.25-acre campus in 2001, inaugurated by DU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Deepak Nayyar after foundation by President Giani Zail Singh in 1987. The college celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 2011.​

Academics & Programs

IHE offers undergraduate (B.Sc. Hons. in Home Science, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Fabric & Apparel Science), postgraduate (M.Sc. in Food & Nutrition, Child Development), and certificate courses across 10 streams. Approved by NCTE, programs emphasize practical skills, research, and professional training in dietetics, nutrition, and sciences, supported by dedicated faculty.​

Campus & Facilities

The urban 2.25-acre campus features manicured lawns, spacious lecture theaters, advanced laboratories, a nursery school, and serene surroundings near metro connectivity. Facilities include a library, Wi-Fi, auditorium, sports areas, cafeteria, and medical support, fostering a stimulating environment for learning and activities.​

Admissions 25-26

Admissions follow DU's CUET-based CSAS portal for UG/PG courses. Eligibility requires minimum Class 12 aggregates (e.g., 50%) with relevant subjects; cutoffs vary by category. Process includes CUET registration, counseling rounds, and document verification with reservations.​
